Q&A
Is a high-mileage BMW diesel worth buying?
asked by Elena on
I am looking at a 320d with about 250 thousand km and full service history. Is it sensible or should I look for lower mileage?

Mileage alone does not decide. A well-serviced diesel can run for several hundred thousand km, while a low-mileage car with neglect can cost more to keep. What counts is evidence: regular oil changes, repair history and consistent readings.
On high-mileage diesels we look especially at the timing drive, EGR valve, DPF, injectors, turbocharger and any leaks. We read the fault memory and check smoke and behaviour on a cold engine.
We also verify that the mileage is credible (see the guide). It all happens in a full inspection, and the result shows which repair costs you can use in the negotiation.
