If I buy a car in the Netherlands and register it elsewhere, do I pay BPM?

asked by Pieter on

I found a BMW in Rotterdam but I plan to register it outside the Netherlands. Does BPM apply to me?

BPM is a Dutch registration tax, so it concerns cars registered in the Netherlands. If the car leaves the country, the relevant taxes are paid in the destination country — which ones depends on that country and the car, so use the calculator. Importing into the Netherlands from abroad is the opposite situation, covered in the guide BPM when importing a car to the Netherlands.

A Dutch dealer price often already includes BPM, so check the invoice for what exactly it contains. During the inspection (€278.30 incl. VAT) we verify the car documents.
