Do I pay excise duty when importing a car from Germany to Poland, and how do I work it out?

asked by Tom on

I am buying a six-year-old diesel in Germany. I heard about excise duty at registration in Poland. How do I calculate it?

When a car imported from the EU is registered in Poland, excise duty is due, and its amount depends on things like engine size and type; registration fees come on top. We do not quote rates here because they change and depend on the car — the exact result for a specific vehicle comes from the import calculator.

The specifics and deadlines are in the guide Excise duty on importing a car to Poland.

Before buying, check the car — the inspection is €278.30 incl. VAT. The tax is worked out for a car that is supposed to run well, so the report helps you avoid the cost of hidden faults.
