Dealer or private seller – which is safer for a used car in BE/NL?

asked by Sofie on

I'm torn between a dealer and a private seller on Marktplaats. Does the inspection work differently in each case?

The inspection is the same: €278.30 for the Full check, whoever is selling. What differs is the context. A dealer normally carries consumer-law obligations towards you, while with a private seller the protections are weaker and most of the risk falls on you.

With a private seller the inspection surfaces hidden faults before you pay; with a dealer it shows what to negotiate on. In both cases don't send a deposit before the car has been checked.

Common traps are in used car listing scams. Travel is counted from Antwerp, and you see the amount on the inspection page.
