Buying an ex-lease car: is it a good deal and what should I watch?

asked by Pieter on

A dealer advertises "ex-lease, full service history". Are such cars safer than private ones?

Often yes, because company cars get regular servicing and the mileage is documented by the lease contract. It is not a rule, though: leasing also means heavy use, many short trips and drivers who do not care about someone else's car.

Check that the service entries are at a franchised workshop and fit the mileage, that there are no fresh paint repairs from "return damage" and that any claims from the lessor were settled. Look at the interior and tyres, which show neglect first.

We make a full assessment during an inspection, including paint measurement. How to turn the findings into a lower price is in the negotiation guide.
