Import a car from Belgium to Greece: Car-Pass, inspection, registration tax and transport
To import a car from Belgium to Greece you pick from about 271,154 active listings with a median asking price of €16,000 (measured 3 November 2026), most of them ex-lease cars sold by dealers with a Car-Pass that proves the mileage, pay €278.30 including VAT for an independent inspection in Belgium before you transfer anything, then clear the car through Greek customs, where the registration tax is assessed for that car, and register it at the Directorate of Transport. Transport from Belgium to Greece is quoted individually.

Belgium is a smaller market than Germany, but a cleaner one for a buyer from Greece. The typical listing is an ex-lease or company car from a dealer around Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent or Liège, sold with a full service history and a Car-Pass — the mandatory Belgian certificate that lists every mileage reading recorded at services and inspections in Belgium. Greece has no public register like it, and a rolled-back odometer is one of the most expensive surprises with an imported car; with a Car-Pass you see the mileage history before you pay, not after the car is registered in your name.
What the Car-Pass does not tell you is the condition of the car today: paint on a repaired panel, corrosion on the underbody after salted Belgian winters, a gearbox that hesitates on the test drive, error codes cleared the day before the viewing. Belgian dealers price cars with Belgian VAT, while private sellers sell without VAT and without a dealer warranty — the price in the listing tells you which one you are dealing with. The car leaves Belgium deregistered: the seller returns the plate to the DIV, so every document has to be in your hands on the day you pay. Our inspector is based in Antwerp, so a Belgian car is a short drive for him and the report with photos reaches you within 24–48 hours.
This page gives the Belgian market numbers we measure, the inspection price, how the registration in Greece works (customs clearance, registration tax, KTEO, Directorate of Transport), how transport from Belgium to Greece is priced and the steps in order.

Belgium is a dense dealer market: most listings come from professional sellers around Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent and Liège, and a large share of the cars are ex-lease or ex-company vehicles with a full service history. Prices are quoted with Belgian VAT included when the seller is a dealer; a private seller sells without VAT and without a dealer warranty.
Two Belgian documents matter more than anything in the listing. The Car-Pass is a mandatory certificate that shows the mileage recorded at every service and inspection in Belgium — a seller who cannot produce it cannot legally sell the car. The second is the certificate of conformity (COC), which the registration office in Greece will ask for and which carries the CO₂ value that decides your tax.
There is no transfer of the registration to the buyer in Belgium: the seller returns the plate to the DIV and the car leaves the country deregistered, on temporary plates or on a transporter. That is why the paperwork has to be complete on the day you pay, not “sent later”.
What to check before you pay for a car in Belgium
- Car-Pass with mileage readings that match the odometer and the service book; no Car-Pass, no purchase.
- Certificate of conformity (COC) present and the CO₂ figure on it noted — that number sets your registration tax in Greece.
- Seller type: a dealer invoice with VAT or a private sale contract; the price in the listing says which.
- Paint thickness on every panel and the underbody for corrosion — Belgian coastal and salted-road winters leave marks.
- A VIN check for accident records, theft and open finance; the free decoder is on the VIN check page.
The step that saves the most money is the one most buyers skip: an independent inspection on site before you pay. A DAExport inspector drives to the car in Belgium, spends 1.5–2 hours on it — OBD scan, paint thickness on every panel, underbody, test drive, documents and VIN history — and sends you a report with photos within 24–48 hours. The price is €278.30 including VAT with the first 30 km of the round trip included; every further kilometre costs €0.47 net. You can see what the report looks like on the sample report page.
If you do not want to negotiate in Dutch, French or German, the add-on “negotiation and closing the deal” (€99 incl. VAT) means we hold the conversation about the price and the paperwork with the seller. The full scope and the order form are on the pre-purchase inspection page.
Taxes and registration in Greece
Greece applies a classification tax (τέλος ταξινόμησης) at the first registration of an imported car; it is based on the taxable value and the CO₂ emissions and is assessed by customs — the amount has to be calculated individually for the car and its age. Our calculator shows only the local registration fees, not the classification tax.
A private buyer pays no Greek VAT on a used car older than six months with more than 6,000 km. The annual road tax (τέλη κυκλοφορίας) depends on CO₂ for newer cars and on engine size for older ones.
The registration goes through the regional transport directorate with the certificate of conformity, the customs clearance and a Greek technical inspection (KTEO).
| Scenario (car priced at the Belgium median, €16,000) | Charges | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol 1.6, 118 g CO₂/km | Local registration fees: €300 | €300 |
| Diesel 2.0, 150 g CO₂/km | Local registration fees: €300 | €300 |
| Petrol 3.0, 210 g CO₂/km | Local registration fees: €300 | €300 |
Indicative amounts from the DAExport import calculator (tables as of July 2026) for a car priced at the Belgium median; fuel, engine size and the CO₂ value from the certificate of conformity change the result. The calculator gives the figure for your car.

Frequently asked questions
Does Greek customs need the Belgian Car-Pass? +
No — customs and the Directorate of Transport ask for the registration certificate, the certificate of conformity and the invoice or purchase contract, not for the Car-Pass. The Car-Pass is for you: it lists every mileage reading recorded in Belgium, so a rolled-back odometer shows up before you pay. Our inspection compares the Car-Pass with the odometer, the service book and the wear of the interior.
How is a Belgian car deregistered when it leaves for Greece? +
In Belgium the registration does not pass to the buyer: the seller returns the plate to the DIV and the car leaves the country deregistered, on temporary plates with insurance for the drive or on a transporter. Agree in writing on the day you pay who hands over which document — the registration certificate, the COC and the invoice must be in your hands before the car moves, because Greek customs will ask for all of them.
How much is the registration tax for a car from Belgium in Greece? +
The registration tax is assessed by the Greek customs office for each car separately, from its taxable value and CO₂ emissions, and the value falls with age and mileage — so we do not quote a figure. Our calculator shows only the local registration fees, about €300. Take the CO₂ value from the Belgian certificate of conformity to the customs office or a customs broker and ask for an estimate before you pay for the car.
What does transport from Belgium to Greece cost? +
We have no fixed route to Greece in the price list, so transport from Belgium to Greece is quoted individually: by transporter all the way, or by transporter to an Italian port and ferry to Patras or Igoumenitsa. Tell us the pick-up address and where the car should arrive, and you get a written price before you decide. The rules — driver, insurance, deposit, delivery time — are the same as for every route on the car transport page.
